Creating a beautiful skin in the shortest possible time with Helen Reeves and Nutrimetics May 9, 2011
Most of us are ‘time poor’ these days, yet we want to look younger for longer.
To complicate matters, there is a vast growing number of ‘lotions & potions’ on the market, with listings of sophisticated ingredients and incredible claims about anti-ageing to choose from. Do you have time to read and digest this information?
So, where do I start? In this series of blogs I will show you how to create a beautiful skin in the shortest possible time and give you the reasons why each step is important.
Your first step is to cleanse your skin thoroughly morning and night to rid it from pollutants, dirt, grime and make-up. You can protect your skin from the damaging and ageing UVA (long rays present even on darkest days) and the UVB light rays.
For your skin to be at its most healthy and operating at its peak performance, it needs to be kept ph balanced. This allows the skin to maintain its own natural protective shield (the acid mantle ). The acid mantle is composed of sebum and sweat which explains why all of our skins differ so much, and how the different seasons and temperatures us.
The ideal pH level of the acid mantle is achieved by maintaining a reading of 5-6 on a scale of 0-14 (7 is neutral, 8-14 is alkaline and 0-6 is acidic).
When the acid mantle is disrupted, the skin is prone to damage and infection. The acid mantle is damaged by the use of products that are ‘too alkaline’’ eg soaps, foaming washes and facial wipes. The alkaline builds up on the skin, crazing and cracking the surface allowing your skin to be attacked by free radicals at worst. The more alkaline on the skin, the more sensitive the skin can become. Recreating and maintaining the acid mantle is so important to having a healthy, glowing skin.
My next blog will explain fighting the free radicals and how anti-oxidants help us.
